039_36468~McHale-s-Navy-Posters_small

Just a stab here, from the stadium seats of the Dead Pool, I am predicting that the McHale’s Navy survivors get whacked…Tim Conway, Bob Hastings, and the big E, Ernie Borgnine. Maybe all three, but at least one in the coming weeks. Make a fool out of myself.

The Nashua Country Club

Uncategorized No Comments

Drove the Old Man to a Nashua Bar Association meeting the other day.  It was nice to be back at the old stamping grounds.  The proceedings were at the Nashua Country Club–a landmark, a place frequented back in the day, a historic piece of Nashua down to the carpets and soft nostalgic music that was soft nostalgic music back in the 1960’s!

The food was visceral, except for the dessert and coffee.  Thank god for short order cooks. Every imagination came back to the Roy Rogers and the cheese and crackers in the little baskets.  Back then our boys were humping the bush and landing on punji sticks looking for Charlie.  Now they are dodging IEDs in Allahallahland and looking at Sarge’s bust.

Here’s to some elegant countinuity. Cheers N.C.C.  Many happy returns.

Salvation Army Recession

Uncategorized No Comments

The Recession has gone full bore.  The Concord Salvation Army has always been great stuff cheap. Forever and a day the paperback books were $.25 a pop.  Not anymore. $.75 is what it will take you to grab a Michener.  Not huge, but just another of the endless of examples of the Great American Fall.

Swapshop

Books, Economy No Comments

Hillsborough “dump” has its own Swapshop where goods and not so good goods can be swapped versus trashed.  Everything from loose change to diapers may be found.  It is definietley hit or miss.  Timing, other junk hunters, and ebb and flow of stuff makes the process unpredicatble and exciting.  But the price is right. scan0062

The economy may be in the toilet.  The wars oversees wallow like a mammoth in a tar pit.  And winter is coming.  But on a bright note  Dartmouth football has won it second game this season.  The win against Columbia was no fluke.  Dartmouth slugged out Cornell 20-17 in an OT grudge match. Boo-ya Boys in Green.  Talk about getting your gear in gear.  Even with no more wins you have broken the grip of last season.  Congrats for being back amongst the winning.  Enjoy your Thanksgiving.

House Divided

Commentary, Current Affairs, Media, Politics No Comments

fw_1_0There are plenty of problems with the country now.  What is totally unnecessary and only adding grief is the media inspiried hate speech.  This virulent barking adds frenzy without  facts to the debates at hand.  Good God this is not Debate Club.  The country and the fates of the people ride on what goes on in Washington.  Maybe the people and the country don’t really matter.  Power, party, and the debasement of debate seem to be the most important.

Our numbers are wrong–high unemployemnt and debt, low valued dollar and bottom rubbing interest rate.  There are two unfinished wars, to say nothing of other issues.

Country first–or your ratings, egos, and parties maybe things of history.

Shipyard Chamberlin Pale Ale (Beer)

Beer bottles usually don’t make good history teachers, but Shipyard Brewery out of Portland Maine is an exception.  Joshua L. Chamberlin, the mug face on the bottle, is a well known hero of the Civil War. He fought against Gen. Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia from 1862 to 1865–Antietam to Appomattox. He and his Maine boys are best known for their stand at Gettysburg.  Shipyard has celebrated this Civil War celebrity by putting out a pale ale with his name on it.  The beer is tasty and flavorful, just hinting of fruit.  The body is medium with a blue collar aftertaste.  Best matched with a burger or brauts–it has an appeal just on its face–yes Joshua Chamberlin.  Oh to travel back in time with a case of Chamberlin. Now that’s messing with history.
