Rain, Rain, Go Away

Economy, Environment, Outdoors No Comments

What a terrible summer.  There have been some bright spots or more accurately sunny days this summer—but hardly enough to light up a dismal economy.  Alas NH tourist economy got hosed like an inmate in a fool’s prison. Any day now the workers will add to the newly unemployed.  But there is no economy to welcome them.  We can’t change the weather, but we can look for the basics for a home based economy—food, clothing, shelter.  Let’s get off the merry go-round and raise food in this land of milk and honey.

Mike’s 50th

Arts, Biographies, Music No Comments

Today marks Michael Jackson’s 50th birthday.  Unfortunately his very un-Hippocratic doctor seems to have done him in with clinical precision.  Too bad.  True MJ was off the weird chart.  But he was also every bit a genius of music, art, show and tell.  He did more by age 6 than I will ever come close to doing.  He worked long and hard, against tough odds in a rough business. MJ could be Motor City cool to trippyin Thriller; with the great Sir Paul McCartney he matched titanic talent; and he could be real with the Simpsons. Stinks getting your life cut short–especially by those hired to look after you, Play on Michael, wherever you are, cause I know you will be there.

Trouble with NH Employment Security

Commentary No Comments

NH Employment Security has had some press lately.  Checks were sent out that shouldn’t have; while others did not get theirs.  This Thursday there will be a huge job fair being held at the NH Speedway. Since the last one was a disaster there is much riding on this.  All of this goes on while the unemployed line just grows longer and longer and tempers get shorter and shorter and…As a client of NHES since October 2007, I can say that the people at Employment Security are doing their best and have always done so.  This is the third time I have used their services since returning from the Peace Corps and they have kept up with the times, except when hit with extraordinary economic devastation–the here and now.  So thank you NHES, you are doing an impossible job well.

Cinnamon Condiment Upgrade

Food No Comments

For the last six months I have been taking my breakfast at the Hillsborough Diner with cinnamon. It had always been an extra like extra coffee or salt, sugar, etc.  But today I saw the bill was higher the usual.  Could it be the upgraded chairs that arrived last week?  Nope. Now cinnamon has a price point—$.50.  Well recession is here to stay.  Too bad, worse times are ahead.

Fishing 2009

Environment No Comments

The fishing seson has been marked by heavy and unrelenting rain.  There have been breaks.  But by all counts fishing on Emerald Lake has been a bust.  No reports have come in of success.  I have seen a few fish, none larger than a small kibbe.  Many a cast has brought a few bites, at best.  So has been life on the lake.

Get On With It

Commentary No Comments

To all the talking heads, politicians, and big business moguls.  Our current health care is too expensive, unsustainable, and loaded with “rationing” (by price or policy).  Direct and honest debate is needed.  The other stuff wastes time and lives, and makes life harder for all of us. I have heard conservatives trumpet the value of competion decade by decade—and yet they shy away from competition in the healthcare field. Get on with it.

Tony Orlando

Tony Orland and Dawn—minor hit-makers from the 1970’s who, like so many others, have come back repackaged for the new century. Not that I am a huge fan, but kudos for the effort, and sorry I found your CDs at Dollar Tree.

Yep, the other day I was visiting my “local” Dollar Tree in Concord NH. Finding stuff is hit or miss for CDs and DVDs. Their record label must have just dropped him for just four dollars I got the following brand new “albums”:

To Be With You

New Ragtime Follies

Finally, I have no mp3 player. I am still in the “put the disc in the box” mindset. For future reference.
